Oil Containment Booms

Oil spills in any type of waterway need to be contained as quickly as possible. The same applies to spills of petrol or any other type of hydrocarbon spill. Whether the spill is in the ocean, a river, lake, pond, or any other watercourse, the spilled material first needs to be controlled – contained – and then removed from the water.

The most common method of oil spill containment in New Zealand is the use of booms. They can be quickly deployed in spill situations and are highly effective at preventing the oil or other spilled material from spreading further into the waterway.

CPL Group provides high-quality oil spill boom kits to be used for a variety of objectives. This includes preventing spilled oil from being washed up onto beaches, stopping oil spills from getting into a sensitive area, or simply containing the oil until it can be removed from the water.

Choosing the Right Oil Spill Containment Solution
There are three critical questions you need to ask when choosing an oil spill containment solution. These questions are focused on the effectiveness and availability of the spill containment kit. Getting answers to the following three questions will speed up your response to the oil spill situation:

Are there oil spill booms available for immediate dispatch?

In an oil spill situation, you don’t have time to wait for a supplier to get oil spill booms back in stock, or for a manufacturer to produce a solution for your requirements. Instead, you need oil spill booms ready to be shipped immediately to your location

Features
  • Our Oil Spill Booms are highly effective temporary floating barriers that you can use to contain oil spills.

  • Oil Spill Containment. This enables you to prevent spilled oil from polluting shorelines and other sensitive areas, plus you can keep the oil in one place to make recovery easier when working in and around the water.

  • In addition, our Oil Booms can also be used in other situations, such as containing duckweed or floating debris.

Benefits
  • Oil Spill Kit, Fast and easy to install

  • Air inflated

  • High-visibility floating device

  • Available in any size and colour

Different Configurations Of Floating Oil Spill Containment Booms

CPL Group provides various configurations of oil spill containment boom to control and limit the spread of oil in water bodies. These configurations play a pivotal role in controlling the spread of oil, minimising environmental impact and ensuring efficient pollution prevention.

Angled

The angled configuration of an oil containment boom is ideal for situations where you need to direct the oil spill toward the shore or a specific collection point. Position the boom at an angle across the water current to direct the oil spill toward the shore or a specific collection point. This setup is particularly effective in rivers or channels where the current can be leveraged to assist in containment.

Double Angled

In this setup, two oil containment booms are arranged in a V-shape or at two different angles. This configuration helps in creating a stronger barrier that funnels the oil into a confined area, making it easier to collect. It’s especially useful in fast-moving waters where a single boom might not provide sufficient control.

Cascade Configuration

The oil containment booms are placed in a cascading fashion, following the water’s flow direction. This configuration is useful in directing the oil spill through multiple barriers, ensuring that any spill that passes the first boom is caught by the subsequent ones. It’s an excellent choice for managing spills in larger bodies of water or in situations where the spill may spread over a broad area.

Chevron Configuration

The containment boom is positioned in a chevron or V-shape pointing upstream. This configuration is designed to corral the oil spill into a specific area, allowing for easier containment and removal. It’s a versatile option that can be adapted to various water conditions.

Open Chevron

Similar to the chevron setup, the open chevron configuration allows for boat traffic while still guiding the oil toward a designated collection area. This configuration is ideal for busy waterways where complete closure of the spill area is not feasible, but effective containment is still required.

U-Shaped

The boom is arranged in a U-shape to surround the oil spill from three sides, directing it toward the centre of the boom for easy collection. This setup is highly effective in containing spills in open water, where the spill needs to be isolated from all directions except the entry point for recovery equipment.

Partially Surrounded

In scenarios where access is needed from one side, the partially surrounding configuration is the best choice. This method involves surrounding the spill on three sides with booms, leaving one side open for the entry of cleanup vessels. It’s particularly useful for spills near the shore or in confined spaces.

Full Surrounded

The oil spill is fully encircled by the boom, ensuring that it is entirely contained and cannot spread further. This method ensures that the spill is fully contained and cannot spread, making it the most secure option for preventing environmental damage. It’s particularly useful in calm waters or where complete containment is critical.

FAQs

In an oil spill situation, you don’t have time to wait for a supplier to get oil spill booms back in stock, or for a manufacturer to produce a solution for your requirements. Instead, you need oil spill booms ready to be shipped immediately to your location

It is also important to ensure the oil spill containment solution is suitable for your requirements. For example, not all oil spill booms are suitable for use in the ocean. There are also some that are only suitable for short-term use. So, make sure the solution you are choosing meets your requirements.

At CPL Group we have several options to choose from, ensuring we can meet just about all needs in oil spill situations.

Making sure the solution can effectively do the job is also important. So, find out about other oil spill situations where the booms have been used and the results of the containment effort.

Our oil spill containment solutions are suitable for a range of different locations, including:
Ocean locations, including in harbours and along shorelines
Rivers, including fast-flowing rivers, Dams, Lakes, Ponds
In particular, the durable and tough construction of our booms, in addition to the innovative design, means they can be used in rough water conditions.

Our 100 percent New Zealand manufactured booms are non-absorbent and are easy to handle, transport, and install. They are available in a range of section lengths, and they are UV resistant. We offer other customisation options, too, including colour, shape, and depth. They are also resistant to chemicals, making them suitable for a range of different spills, not just oil.
